This is a second hail report for hail that fell on 9/30 after I collected the first hail pad at 1:50 PM. When I checked the rain gauge on October 1 there was .18 inches of precip, consistent with my wife's and my observations, but an outlier compared to surrounding stations that reported .03 to .05. I didn't study the hail pad because it was covered with ice. Today (10/4) I brought in the hail pad and discovered, and from lack of precipitation on other days, concluded that the hail fell on 9/30. Heavy precipitation was reported on the neighbor's Weather Underground station KC0GOLDE14 0.5 miles east of my rain gauge. It showed rain starting at 12 noon, rising to a peak of .09 in/hr at 1 PM, .04 in/hr at 2:00 PM, .01 in/hr at 3:00 PM, .03 in/hr at 4:00 PM, finally ending at 5:30 PM. I think that originally more numerous indentations on the hail pad may have been annealed during the heaviest period of rain. However, tiny strikes were NOT annealed. suggesting that hail may have fallen in 2 events, one before and the other after the heaviest rain. |
