FIRE - Still remains very severe as we have had no precipitation in the last week. ENERGY - Good news here as our temperatures have been close to normal the first 3-5 days of the week. Only the last two days have they been above normal. GENERAL - ABout the same for this time of year. Our highs are in the low 80’s so AC during the heat of the day and open doors morning and evening. Low’s in the normal range in the low 60’s, just some heat to take the chill off in the morning and then no need for more.  View

Conditions are very dry. Nineteen days since the last significant rain, no rain this month. USFS is reporting moderate risk of fire, however, local conditions are much worse. Two forest fires are burning within a 2 mile radius (both currently contained). All surface water (wetlands, swales, ditches) which normally contain open water, are now completely dry. Wildlife is now seeking water from humans. My honey bees are drinking from the bird baths.  View

General: We're doing well for moisture: We have 121.63" of snow to date, with our 25 year long-term (uncalibrated) average being 109.02. This is really good news for our dryland farming. Fields are largely snow-free at this point, and creeks and springs are running. Agriculture: Again, great news from the moisture standpoint. Energy: Yesterday we created 55.36 kWHR and used 43.53 kWHR. We're consistently creating more than we use, even on cloudy days. Fire: Risk is increasing daily. Plants/wildlife: We're seeing a few more ducks, and several sandhill cranes. Red Wing Blackbirds are back, and we saw a marmot the other day on Buckskin! Water: We're in good shape!  View

My area picked up 0.24" of precip over the week. It was beginning to look like mildly dry soil conditions had arrived but for the time being near normal soil conditions will remain. Heavy weather with some large hail was to our North 50 miles or so, so far. Our NWS warning for stormy weather in the region pretty much nailed it and hopefully they will be able to continue to do so. Area waterways are down slightly since last week but are still fairly close to normal levels. With the cool temps lately the trees are slow to green and area lawns are slow to grow. I have yet to mow this year but will have to do so soon enough. Wildlife activity has been limited to just birds this week with the two resident geese still wandering around in my yard. Some crows have been around lately and one made the mistake of getting too near a turkey. I caught the tail end of what looked like the crow getting a rude demonstration of who is the boss. Those turkeys are not as tolerant as I once thought.  View

Conditions here are mildly dry. We are about 85% of the 30 year average rainfall. We have received rain but then low humidity conditions follow each rainstorm. All plants are in full swing and hay fever yellow pollen is everywhere. Small streams are flowing and Jorden Lake is nearly bank full. People are out walking and gardening enjoying the overall pleasant weather. The "no fires allowed restrictions" have been lifted for the time being.  View

With 1.90” of precipitation over the last two weeks, conditions are now mildly wet. The Pascoag Reservoir has completely filled, is now at 9’3” and is overflowing the spillway. Kayaks, pontoon boats and fishermen are regularly on the lake now. The lawn was mowed for the first time this week and needed it. Regular mowing has started. Our Haikubox picked up Baltimore Orioles for the first time this week, but we haven’t spotted them yet. On calmer days we’ve seen groups(15-20) of swallows feeding but the lake for the first time this year. Spring flowers like daffodils, hyacinths and forsythia are in full bloom. Tulips would also be in bloom if the deer weren’t eating them. Day lilies, bearded iris and hostas are growing quickly now. Trees are still showing red buds but should be popping green very soon. Hiking trails at Douglas Forest are pretty wet and hard to get through due to standing or flowing water on the trails, a little wet for April but not excessively so. The fire danger posted at George Washington state park is still Low.  View

Until further notice: "severely dry". Another week with no rain (though expected today and for the next few days.) Meanwhile, fire danger has been high, and gardens need irrigation. Wild flowers have been out, but not with the vigor of some past years. Pollen is a concern, too, since many trees are blossoming. We need several good rains as we are 3-4" below average for this year here.  View

For week of 13-19 Apr: (4.4+ 0.1+ 0+ 7.4+ 0+ 0+ 0)= 11.9mm, Near Normal. High's: +4C to +15C; Low's: +5C to +1C; Wind: Slight to Light, V to 26km/hr; Dew/Frost: 1 AM light dew. This past week, the deer have been regular visitors. The Doe's are stepping back, and the yearlings are coming on their own. After the Deer have grazed and their hoofs have softened the ground, the Robbins come to pull worms. I now hear a Woodpecker each morning, along with the song birds. Its wonderful. The grass is greening. Yesterday was a gorgeous day, high of +15C. Up til then, quite cool. Bulbs may be a little late in sprouting. On the people side, we are into Easter long weekend. And, Early Voting has begun, with long line-up's; Yay for fair weather. Peggy's Cove Rd was steady with traffic. Blue sky, sunshine and blue water are rather enticing. We'll take it.  View
